Sacred Spires and Spectacular Spaces • Monday,
March 19 • 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. • $96/ person •
The amazing variety of historic architecture in
Milwaukee can be overwhelming, but this tour will
make it easy for visitors and architecture buffs to
enjoy all of it. The tour kicks off with a visit to the
Basilica of St. Josaphat. Built in 1900 and patterned
after St. Peter’s in Rome, The Basilica of St. Josephat
has all the elements of a classical Romanesque
basilica. It is recognized by the city of Milwaukee
as an officially designated landmark. Next, the tour
will visit St. John’s Cathedral, a Milwaukee landmark
designed in an austere German style known as
Zopfstil and built of Milwaukee brick. Since the
laying of the cornerstone December 5, 1847, the
exterior appearance
has changed very little
except for the present
tower, which was constructed in 1893, and the
expansion of the east end of the building, which was
added during the rebuilding of the Cathedral after the
fire that partially destroyed the church on January
29, 1935. Tour attendees will get a chance to take
a break for lunch at the Water Buffalo, Milwaukee’s
award winning riverfront restaurant that is located
in the heart of the historic third ward. The menu
boasts many casual dining options in the marvelously
designed Broadway dining room. After lunch, the
Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum offers visitors
a chance to view fine and decorative arts dating
from the 15th through the 18th centuries, wroughtiron
masterpieces by Cyril Colnik, newly refurbished
formal gardens, and changing exhibitions. The
building was originally the residence of former A.O.
Smith president, Lloyd Smith, and his family. Finally,
the tour will visit the Pabst Mansion, considered the
jewel of Milwaukee’s famous avenue of mansions on
Grand Avenue. The building represents the epitome
of America’s Gilded Age Splendor in Milwaukee. The
Pabst Mansion is a testament to Pabst’s success, his
love of life and his German heritage. Boasting stunning
interiors, elegant original furnishings, elaborate
wall coverings, the finest wood craftsmanship,
intricate ironwork, brilliant stained glass, and rare
art, the Mansion helped make the 1890’s the “Pabst
Decade” in Milwaukee. The docent tour will take
visitors through the 20,000 square feet of elaborately
handcrafted woodwork, original wall coverings and
furnishings, leaded glass, important 19th century art
work and the life of Captain Pabst and his wife.
