IIAR 9 Certificate Program

PROGRAM SCOPE
It is anticipated that course participants will become familiar with the ANSI/IIAR 9-2020 Standard for Minimum System Safety Requirements for Existing Closed-Circuit Ammonia Refrigeration Systems and be able to apply those requirements to a safely operated refrigeration system.

INTENDED AUDIENCE
This course is intended to serve as continuing education for industrial refrigeration professionals whose job responsibilities include safe operation of existing closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems. This audience would include plant managers, maintenance directors and supervisors, engineering managers, facilities engineers, facility managers, service technicians, mechanical engineers, refrigeration engineers, as well as other employees who focus on day-to-day operations of existing ammonia refrigeration systems.

Module 1 - Background Material, Chapters 1-6
This module reviews background material that provides the foundation for development of ANSI/IIAR 9-2020; key definitions; ITM; documentation; and the standard's purpose, scope and applicability to maintaining the safe operation of existing closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems.

Module 2 - Sections 7.1-7.3
The second training module in the IIAR 6 Certificate Course begins with a look at allowable inside and outdoor locations for ammonia equipment. We’ll also address general system safety requirements including system temperature and pressure, oil management, insulation, service provisions, emergency shutdown documentation and equipment enclosures. Module 2 finishes up with a review of general machinery room requirements such as construction, access and egress, piping and drains, emergency control switches, ventilation, and ammonia detection and alarms.

Module 3 - Section 7.4, Chapter 8, and Appendices
Module 3 starts off with an examination of general equipment safety requirements for pressure relief, hydrostatic overpressure protection, allowable locations for refrigerant piping, and instrumentation and controls. We’ll then review Chapter 8, which lays out the requirements for performing a system safety evaluation. The course concludes with a look at the informative IIAR 9 appendices, with a focus on documentation, suggested machinery room signage, and a report from a sample system safety evaluation.

Final Certificate Examination will be administered online. Qualified registrants MUST have paid their Certificate Course tuition and MUST have successfully completed the Module 1-3 Quick Check Quizzes (at least 80% correct on all three quizzes).

Continuing Education Credits

After completing an IIAR Academy of Natural Refrigeration certificate course, successfully completing the accompanying quizzes, and passing the final course exam, you will earn the corresponding number of continuing education credits, which can be applied toward maintaining P.E. licensure. IIAR is accredited by the Registered Continuing Education Program for Engineers, Surveyors & A/E/C Professionals (RCEP) as an approved provider of continuing education

The IIAR 9 Certificate Course offers 1.75 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) to learners who successfully complete the course.

The IIAR Academy of Natural Refrigerants is a long-term education program created to address the need for competent professionals in natural refrigeration system design, safety, and maintenance. The objective of the academy is to address the technical training needs of end users, design build contractors, equipment manufacturers and consulting engineering sectors of the IIAR membership. As industry codes and regulations change and evolve, the need for competent refrigeration professionals will continue to expand.

IIAR Certificate Courses are based on ASTM standards and allow design engineers, installers, and responsible parties to show that they have received documented and standardized instruction regarding design and operation of ammonia-based refrigeration systems, and/or the current regulatory environment within the industry.

How It Works
The IIAR 9 Certificate Course consists of three training sessions, each approximately 40 minutes long, delivered as a PowerPoint presentation with lecture. At the end of each module, there are questions to check comprehension of the material. After comprehension of material is demonstrated via successful completion of the short “Quick Check” quiz, you can move onto the next module. To receive a certificate of completion, participants are also required to pass a comprehensive final course examination.

Course Requisites
We recommend these minimum requirements for individuals interested in participating in this program:

* General knowledge of the physical properties of ammonia

* Working knowledge regarding equipment that may be employed in operational closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems.

* Familiarity with operation and maintenance of a closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration system.

Learning Objectives
After completing this program, learners will be able to:

  • List the equipment documentation and system component documentation required by IIAR 9.
  • Identify the locations where ammonia refrigeration equipment is permitted to be installed.
  • Summarize the minimum safety requirements applicable to all systems.
  • Summarize general machinery room requirements.
  • Develop a checklist that can be used to evaluate an ammonia refrigeration system based on IIAR 9 requirements.
  • Explain how the non-mandatory information offered in the IIAR 9 appendices informs an understanding of the standard’s normative materials.
