Estimating Accidental Refrigerant Releases - Certificate Course

NOTE:
This course is complementary with purchase of the “Estimating Accidental Refrigerant Releases” guideline, for one person. It is also available for free to IIAR members and will not be considered one of the two complimentary courses for new/renewing members. In order to complete the course, participants who register for the course without purchasing the guideline MUST have a colleague within their company who can share access to the guideline and the estimating tool that accompanies the guideline.

Intended Audience

This course is intended to serve as continuing education for industrial refrigeration professionals whose job responsibilities include documentation of procedures and safe operation of closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems.

This audience would include plant managers, maintenance directors and supervisors, designers, engineering managers, facilities engineers, facility managers, service technicians, mechanical engineers, and refrigeration engineers, as well as employees who focus on regulatory requirements for ammonia refrigeration systems.

Estimating Accidental Refrigerant Releases - Certificate Course

PROGRAM SCOPE
It is anticipated that course participants will become familiar with the IIAR Guideline for Estimating Accidental Refrigerant Releases, including the accompanying Release Estimation Tool, and be able to apply that informative material as part of a comprehensive incident investigation that complies with complies with regulatory requirements.

COURSE SYLLABUS

Module 1 - Background
Module 1 reviews the purpose, scope, and applicability of the guideline, with an emphasis on the types of releases that are covered (and not covered) by the guideline.

Module 2 - First Steps in Assessing a Release
The second module in this certificate course looks at the initial steps to take in assessing the size of a refrigerant release, including a quick screening method to determine if a release is less than or over 100 lbs. We also detail the information that should be gathered in order to characterize the release and fully contribute to an incident investigation.

Module 3 - Equations
In Module 3, participants will increase their knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals which were used to develop the governing equations to estimate refrigerant releases. Topics include fluid dynamic fundamentals, gas flow model determinations, liquid flow model determinations, and equivalent geometric diameters.

Module 4
Applying the Ammonia Release Calculation Tool to Gas Releases
Module 4 continues with definitions and instruction on using the Release Calculation Tool for gas releases.

Module 5
Applying the Ammonia Release Calculation Tool to Liquid Releases
Module 5 offers instruction on using the Release Calculation Tool for liquid releases.

Final Exam
The final course examination is administered online. Qualified registrants MUST have paid their Certificate Course tuition and MUST have successfully completed all Quick Check Quizzes (at least 80% correct on all quizzes).

Member Price: FREE
Non-Member Price: Free with Guideline Purchase, available for $350 if the Guideline has not been purchased. Contact [email protected] to enroll if you are not a member and have not purchased the Guideline.

How It Works
Academy of Natural Refrigerants’ certificate courses are self-paced and are available entirely online, including the final exam.

Guideline purchasers will be sent an enrollment code with the purchase confirmation and instructions for obtaining the Ammonia Release tool.

The “Estimating Accidental Refrigerant Releases” certificate course includes five training sessions, each 15-30 minutes long, delivered as a PowerPoint presentation with lecture. At the end of each module, learners must successfully complete a short quiz to check your comprehension of the material. To receive a certificate and continuing education credit, participants will be required to pass all quizzes as well as a final course examination, which is included in the course registration fee.

Course Requisites
We recommend these minimum requirements for individuals interested in participating in this program:

  • General knowledge of the physical properties of ammonia
  • Familiarity with design, operation, and maintenance of closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems
  • Working knowledge regarding equipment that may be employed in operational closed-circuit ammonia refrigeration systems
  • A copy of the Guideline and Release estimating tool

Learning Objectives
After completing the “Estimating Accidental Refrigerant Releases” Certificate Course, learners will be able to:

  • Discuss the purpose, scope, and applicability of this guideline
  • Identify the types of releases covered by the guideline
  • Use the guideline and accompanying Ammonia Release Calculation Tool as part of a comprehensive incident investigation that complies with complies with regulatory requirements

Continuing Education Credits
After completing an IIAR Academy of Natural Refrigeration certificate course, successfully completing the accompanying quizzes, and passing the final course exam, you will earn the corresponding number of continuing education credits, which can be applied toward maintaining P.E. licensure. IIAR is accredited by the Registered Continuing Education Program for Engineers, Surveyors & A/E/C Professionals (RCEP) as an approved provider of continuing education

The “Estimating Accidental Refrigerant Releases” certificate course offers 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for learners who successfully complete the course.

The IIAR Academy of Natural Refrigerants is a long-term education program created to address the need for competent professionals in natural refrigeration system design, safety, and maintenance. The objective of the academy is to address the technical training needs of end users, design build contractors, equipment manufacturers, operators, safety/PSM specialists, and consulting engineering sectors of the IIAR membership. As industry codes and regulations change and evolve the need for competent professionals in our industry will continue to grow.

IIAR Certificate Courses are based on ASTM standards and allow industrial refrigeration professionals to show that they have received documented and standardized instruction regarding the requirements for safe design and operation of ammonia-based refrigeration systems.
