COURSE PURPOSE
Ammonia refrigeration system managers are always looking for better information about risk mitigation, monitoring, and compliance with regard to corrosion under insulation (CUI). This includes how to determine if components are fit for service or are vulnerable, and when to take action.
Generally, all insulated piping is subject to CUI, some more so due to location, orientation, or function. There is an appeal for knowledge to help support a focused approach to regularly monitor the state of piping that respects available time and funds.
By comparing 20+ years of non-destructive testing (NDT) samples on refrigeration piping directly to documented field observations and specific characteristics, certain patterns have emerged that validate evidence of weakness based on common factors. This quantitative information verifies prime CUI breeding locations and highlights cues that corrosion is present.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After attending this session, participants will be able to …
- Discuss sources and causes of CUI on insulated piping and general measures to prevent its occurrence.
- List common areas of susceptibility.
- Identify indications that CUI is either present or likely to occur.
- Classify and prioritize suspect areas.
