IIAR Industry Books

IIAR is the world's leading advocate for the safe, reliable and efficient use of ammonia and other natural refrigerants.  IIAR members share their collective knowledge and experience on committees and task forces to produce consensus documents that address various aspects of the natural and industrial refrigeration industry. Each IIAR committee or task force has broad industry representation including manufacturers, design engineers, contractors, end users, academics, scientists, and/or trainers.  IIAR sets the standard for providing advocacy, education and the most up-to-date technical information to the ammonia and natural refrigeration community.  IIAR members receive significant discounts on IIAR publications as well as free online access to Bulletins, Standards, Technical Papers, and the Ammonia Data Book.  To become an IIAR member click here.

International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration Refrigeration Releases Estimating Accidental Refrigeration Releases

This guideline primarily covers methods to estimate refrigerant mass flow rates and total refrigerant losses during accidental releases involving industrial refrigeration systems.  Although the guideline was developed for use in estimating refrigerant releases primarily associated with ammonia refrigeration systems, the methods described are equally suitable for estimating refrigerant release rates associated with other natural refrigerants such as hydrocarbons. The guideline is accompanied by a calculation program (Microsoft Excel spreadsheet) that will aid in making a quick determination of released refrigerant. Purchasers and any IIAR member will have access to an online training course on the use of the calculation program. Instructions to gain access to the calculation program and register for the course will be sent with the purchase confirmation.  Click here for more information

Guideline for Entering Evaporator Condensers

Evaporative condensers are normally considered permit required confined spaces (PRCS). Under certain conditions, evaporative condensers can be reclassified to non-permit required confined spaces. This guideline is intended to assist end users in the development of procedures that will enable them to reclassify evaporative condensers and allow employees to enter them without the necessity of PRCS requirements. Because the isolation and/or removal of ammonia from evaporative condenser circuit(s) can be challenging and will sometimes be required for reclassification, various methods are presented. IIAR Critical Task Guidance for Ammonia Refrigeration System Emergency Planning, 1st Edition

The IIAR Critical Task Guidance for Ammonia Refrigeration System Emergency Planning, 1st Edition was published to assist employers, government regulators, and public safety emergency responders in preparing emergency procedures to avoid and address ammonia incidents. The guideline was developed to increase safety when working in and around ammonia refrigeration systems and to mitigate the consequences of accidental releases. This document provides guidance for ensuring that existing emergency action and/or response plans include appropriate personal protective equipment selection, training, and emergency planning and communication associated with these critical tasks. Guideline for Installing Insulation on Ammonia Refrigeration Systems, 1st Edition

The IIAR Guideline for Installing Insulation on Ammonia Refrigeration Systems was developed to enhance the safety, reliability, effectiveness, and longevity of insulated piping, vessels, and other equipment. It provides detailed instructions for installing insulation systems, provides examples of poorly installed or maintained insulation systems, and provides quality assurance guidance to help owners and contractors achieve a high level of quality for installed insulation systems. This guideline focuses on the appropriate steps in installing insulation systems for cold piping and equipment on new and existing ammonia refrigeration systems. Additional precautions for working on or around charged ammonia refrigeration systems are necessary but are not addressed within the scope of this guideline. This guideline was developed as the result of an Ammonia Refrigeration Foundation research project. Its scope is limited to the application of polyisocyanurate (PIR) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) because most refrigeration applications use these two types of insulation. Guideline for Developing an Energy Control Plan for Manual Hand Valves in Ammonia Refrigeration Systems, 2nd Edition

The inadvertent or accidental opening of manual hand valves has been a contributing cause in many ammonia releases and although the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) enacted the control of hazardous energy (lockout/tagout) regulation in 1989 (Title 29 §1910.147), the industry has lacked clarity on how to apply this regulation to manually operated hand valves in an ammonia refrigeration system.  Since becoming law, many industries have widely implemented energy control programs, often referred to as lockout/tagout or LOTO programs. Historically, LOTO programs have appropriately focused on hazardous electrical and mechanical energy. IIAR has developed this document with the aim to fill a gap in the industry and to provide guidance to owners, operators, maintenance personnel, and contractors by describing the best practices on applying an energy control plan to manual hand valves in ammonia refrigeration systems.  It is a tool to supplement an existing LOTO program relative to manual hand valves. The Refrigeration Piping Handbook

Newly Revised! - Refrigeration Piping Handbook

A guide to modern refrigeration piping – this book is a comprehensive introduction to refrigeration piping as it is practiced in the field.

Originally printed in 2000, this publication has gone through several updates throughout the years.  The 2019 update is considered a cover-to-cover review and edit.  Chapter 1 is significantly different from the last version.

It provides an engineering basis for determining pressure drop in single-phase and two phase-flow regimes as well as determining pressure drop in wet suction vertical risers - based on current research and analysis via full-scale testing. In addition, new nomographs were generated to aid the user with determining pressure drop in various flow regimes.  Parameters for determining pressure drop in stainless steel pipe are now included. The user is also referred to several computer programs that can be used to determine pressure drop and assist in selecting pipe sizes based on varying operating and economic conditions.  Some mandatory language has been changed to non-mandatory and a new appendix has been added which addresses piping and equipment identification.

IIAR Member Price: $550.00
Non-member Price: $1100.00

Piping Handbook purchasers are able to access electronic documents that provide single and two-phase pipe pressure drop values for vertical suction risers as well as a cost optimization program to aid in economic pipe sizing evaluations.  Downloads can be found under Store, Publication Resources, Piping Handbook.

Low Charge Ammonia Refrigeration Management (ARM-LC) Guidelines, 1st edition

The IIAR has developed the Low Charge Ammonia Refrigeration Management (ARM-LC) Guidebook to provide a detailed overview of the procedures recommended to implement a management program for low charge ammonia refrigeration systems with appropriate regulatory compliance. Owners of low charge ammonia systems may not be well versed in the terminology and practices required for compliance with the General Duty Clauses of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and state authorities. Further, the new equipment technology available allows the low charge ammonia systems to be used in a commercial, retail food, and light industrial application where technicians and operators are not typically on site and a service contractor business model is the general practice. The ARM-LC Guidebook uses general terms and directions to describe the specific practices and expectations of those involved with installing and using low charge ammonia systems.
