2019 Founders Engineering Scholarship

Overview:

The IIAR and its foundation is a Technical Association made up of Engineers, End-Users, Contractors and Manufactures working in the Natural Refrigeration Industry.  The organization and its membership develop ANSI approved Safety Standards, Technical Publications and Education materials to support the use of Natural Refrigerants in refrigeration.

In 2018, the Foundation awarded three (3), two-year scholarships, to engineering students attending engineering programs at Delaware, Missouri and Pennsylvania State Universities.

Scholarship:

Our Founders Scholarship is awarded each year to three (3) collegiate Juniors exhibiting exceptional character and interest in pursuing an engineering or related technical degree leading to a career in the refrigeration field. 

The scholarship also provides additional funds for registration, travel, lodging and meals associated with attending IIAR’s Annual Natural Refrigeration Conference & Expo during the Spring of their Junior year. 

Award:
Scholarship funds are applicable for tuition only and paid directly to the Recipient’s college or university.

Junior Year
$4,000 annually, to be paid in two equal installments of $2,000.

Each recipient will receive an invitation to attend IIAR’s Annual Natural Refrigeration Conference & Expo during the Spring of their Junior year.  The scholarship provides additional funds for registration, travel, lodging and meals associated with attendance.

Senior Year
$9,000 annually, to be paid in two equal installments of $4,500 for recipients that attended IIAR’s Annual Natural Refrigeration Conference & Expo during the spring of their junior year.

OR

$4,000 annually, to be paid in two equal installments of $2,000 for recipients that did not attend IIAR’s Annual Conference and Trade Expo during the spring of their junior year.

Scholarship Criteria

  • Open to Juniors attending a 4-year accredited engineering college.
  • Must be pursuing a course emphasis in thermal fluid science or related disciplines.
  • Completed 45 semester credit hours (or equivalent) or 90 quarter credits at the time of application.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) towards an engineering degree.

Selection Criteria:

The objective of the IIAR/ARF Scholarship Program is to attract outstanding engineering and technical students who seek careers in the field of refrigeration.

The applications will be reviewed and scored by the Scholarship Sub-Committee to select the three (3) highest scoring applicants, with maximum score of twenty (20) by using the following criteria:

Grade Point Average

1 Point                          Minimum GPA of 3.0

Additional Points          One (1) point for each 0.2 points above the minimum GPA to a maximum of five (5) points for a 4.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale)

Letter(s) of Recommendation

One (1) point for each letter of recommendation.

Two (2) additional points can be assigned by each committee member for each letter of recommendation.

Applicants will receive a score based on the average of the committee members’ scores, with a maximum of six (6) points awarded.  

Work/Extra Curricular Activity Experience

Each committee member will evaluate the applicant responses in this section and award one (1) to four (4) points using the criteria as if they were looking to hire the applicant for an internship or summer job.

Strength of Interest Essay

Short Essays are evaluated by each committee member and rated on a scale of one (1) to five (5) points using the following criteria:

  • Applicant's level of understanding related to natural refrigerants and industrial refrigeration
  • Applicant's level of interest in pursuing a career in the industry

Applicants will receive a score based on the average of all committee members' review, with a maximum of five (5) points awarded.
